How to Use a Pom Maker Pom-Pom Maker (say that ten times fast!)
Making pom-poms with a Pom Maker is fun and easy and makes reliable pom-poms every time. I'm using their small Pom Maker, which I like to use to make tight 5cm Pom-Poms.
Follow these simple steps to create your own fluffy pom-poms:
Place 2 of the wooden semi circles of the Pom Maker together, pegs facing out, and start wrapping your yarn around them to hold them together. The more yarn you wrap, the fuller / bigger your pom-pom will be.
2. Once you've wrapped enough yarn to your liking (don't worry - you'll get a feel for this quickly) around BOTH sides, put them together so they make a circle (you might need to squish the wool a bit) and pop the top and bottom pieces (the green peices in the above pics) on either side to hold it in place - inserting the pegs into the holes. You should not have what looks like a wooden macaroon filled with yarn. You will have to hold the 2 sides of the pom maker in place so they hold the yarn in place.
3. While still holding on tightly, take a pair of sharp scissors and turning the pom maker on it's side, carefully insert one side of the scissors under the wool so it's sitting in the wooden ridge and the top scissor is above the wool. Cut the yarn along the ridge being sure to continue pressing on either side firmly.
4. Cut a separate piece of yarn (about 20 cm) and tie it tightly around the center of the cut yarn, securing your pom-pom in place. You might need someone to help you here, and you will need to double knot. The tighter you can make it, the firmer your pom-pom will be.
5. Remove the Pom Maker pieces gently to release your pom-pom.
6.
Trim the wool strands to shape your pom-pom into a perfect round ball. This can take some time, and I'd recommend using smaller scissors once you get closer to the ideal shape to ensure precision. I roll the ball softly in circles in my palms often to loosen any strands that are folded or release any areas I might have been matting with my fingers.
If you're making a few of the same size, make sure to have one nearby to ensure consistency.
You now have a beautiful pom-pom ready to be attached to your knitting, crocheting, or any other craft project.
What do you think? Will you buy one?
